I just ordered a 54 caliber Pedersoli flint. Can anybody suggest a starting load?

NOTHING BUT BLACK POWDER. 3Fg. (FFFg.)

I started mine at 25 grains, then work up. I run 40 grains max, that is a hefty load that is going to give your gun approximately a .45 Long Colt performance.

Hi sbingham
Read the owners manual it will give recommended loads.
A good rule of thumb. For rifles start with 1 grain of powder per caliber (example-54 caliber start with 54 grains of black powder).
For pistol use 1/2 grain of black powder per caliber (example-54 divided by 2 = 27 grains). Work your way up slowly until you find a load that shoots good!

Good luck
Scott
